Roskeen Construction Mid Tipperary Junior A Hurling Championship
Report by Caitlin Donnelly.
It was all to play for in the Roskeen Construction Mid Tipperary Junior A Hurling Championship Quarter-Final between Moycarkey Borris and Thurles Gaels in Littleton on Friday evening.

It was nip and tuck from the start and after five minutes Thurles Gaels were ahead by one point with Moycarkey only scoring from frees, Thurles Gaels 0-3 Moycarkey Borris 0-2. The game was close throughout and when Eoghan Hayes won a free with fifteen minutes gone to allow for a Tony Flanagan point Moycarkey took the lead, 0-7 to 0-6. While Moycarkey were ahead by three points at the break it was clear goals were going to win this game.

As the second half started both teams were eager to win this match. An almost goal chance for Thurles Gaels was stopped by Michael Bergin which ensured Moycarkey kept their lead. Both teams kept hitting over scores but a well struck point by Ailbe Power just after his wide gave Moycarkey momentum to push on. A missed goal chance and four wides from Moycarkey allowed Thurles Gaels to drop a long ball into the square. Thurles Gaels managed to get it across the line levelling the game, 0-16 to 1-13.

Thurles Gaels reacted better but Moycarkey dug deep and a Robert Doran goal gave Moycarkey a three point lead, 1-16 to 1-13. With two minutes to go in normal time Thurles Gaels won a free in front of the goal. Moycarkey backs along with goalkeeper David Ryan lined up on the goal line. A well taken shot was blocked by Rory O'Regan and it was evident from there that Moycarkey would push on to victory. Final score was Moycarkey 1-18 Thurles Gaels 1-13.

After this Quarter-Final victory, there was little time for the team to rest on their laurels with a Semi-Final date with Thurles Sarsfields scheduled less than 40 hours later, Sunday at midday in Gortnahoe. The first half was a very tight affair and while Moycarkey-Borris led for most of the opening period, a Mark Lanigan goal for Sarsfields ensured they led by 1-8 to 0-9 at the interval. Ten minutes in to the second half, the Thurles side had increased their lead to four points. However, a Moycarkey goal courtesy of Brian Moran along with a couple of points put us in front by a point heading in to the final quarter. Thurles would level soon afterwards but the momentum was now with Moycarkey and three unanswered points put the red and yellow side in to a commanding position. Sarsfields tried valiantly for the scores to bring the game level but the Moycarkey defence were strong and at the final whistle, Moycarkey ran out two-point winners, 1-20 to 1-18. Moycarkey-Borris will now play Holycross-Ballycahill in the Mid Junior A Hurling Final and have also qualified for the County Quarter-Finals in this grade.

In the A competition Tipperary were successful in getting to the All Ireland Final but met a stronger Kilkenny team and were defeated on a score line Kilkenny 4-12 Tipperary 2-10. Well done to Darren Flood, Max Hackett, Kevin Hayes and Jack Morrissey who represented Moycarkey Borris on the team. In the B competition Tipperary left the competition in dramatic fashion when penalties were required to separate Tipperary and Cork. Peter Melbourne represented Moycarkey Borris.
In the Under 15 Competition Tipperary had two teams and Moycarkey Borris was represented on the A team by Noel McKelvey who managed the team. Noel and his team were competing in Cork and won the A Plate Final. Kyle Ryan represented Moycarkey Borris on the B team who played in Tulla, Co. Clare and they met a stronger Kerry team in the Shield Final.

Buster Night Fundraiser
Saturday, October 7th Moycarkey Borris GAA Club will hold a fundraising buster night in Thurles Greyhound Stadium. All monies raised from the night will go the development fund and with works on the new clubhouse due to commence in the coming days the funds will be needed. Tickets for the buster night are available from any club officer and everyone’s support will be greatly appreciated. Tickets are €10 and include admission to the Greyhound Stadium on the night.

Harry Ryan Tournament
The Harry Ryan tournament makes a welcome return to the Club this year on Saturday, September 16th. This tournament was postponed last year due to the pitch development in the club grounds. This tournament is for Under 16’s and we welcome clubs from other counties to compete in the club grounds in the memory of Harry Ryan, who was a stalwart member of the club, organising many fundraisers within the club.

Conor Kennedy Tournament
Another tournament that was postponed last year is the Conor Kennedy Under 14 tournament. Again pitch development meant we could not facilitate the tournament last year. Conor Kennedy worked tirelessly for the club over his lifetime and is remembered by the tournament which will be held on Sunday, September 17th.
