Exciting draw involving Shannon Rovers

Moycarkey-Borris 2-11 Shannon Rovers 2-11

Report by Rose Mannion for the Nenagh Guardian newspaper

Shannon Rovers were reeled in by Moycarkey with this County Intermediate Camogie Championship semi-final which requires a replay following an exciting draw on Saturday afternoon. Leading by eight points at half time, Rovers looked as if they had the game all wrapped up but they certainly weren’t expecting the second half comeback that their opponents provided and by the end of the hour, Rovers were lucky to hold out for a draw. Goalkeeper Rita Burke made a superb save in the dying minutes to keep her side in the hunt for a final berth.

Shannon Rovers had the best possible start when within thirty seconds Aoife McLoughney netted. Moycarkey struggled to get to grips with the power that Rovers provided, and in doing so they were forced to foul which gave Rovers the chance to add two points through the accurate McLoughney who had the game of her life. Marianne Murphy opened Moycarkey’s account eight minutes in but it was cancelled out quickly when Sabrina Larkin and Andrea Davis combined but the Moycarkey keeper wasn’t going to be caught out so easily again and she saved at the expense of a ‘45’ which McLoughney converted. Lorraine Davis and Sinead Cahalan worked hard in midfield but McLoughney was unlucky to have her great effort at goal saved by Moycarkey keeper Siobhan Doran with corner back Karen Mullins clearing.

Moycarkey’s first goal came as the game entered the second quarter when after working the ball into the forward line, Sharon Ralph’s effort deceived goalkeeper Rita Burke. However Aoife McLoughney replied with a point at the opposite end. Both teams traded points but it never looked like Moycarkey could cause an upset and more so when Julie Brennan netted for Rovers second goal with five minutes to go to the break. Immediately, Moycarkey launched an attack through Mary Love and Kelly Hackett but great defending from Rovers Amanda Bourke and keeper Rita Burke kept Rovers goal in tact as Sabrina Larkin and McLoughney tagged on a further two points. Michaela Graham dropped a long range free short in the hope of scoring a goal and Maeve Hackett was frustrated as her effort went over but she was looking for a goal. Sabrina Larkin finished the half with a going point to leave Rovers in a commanding position at half time.

Four unanswered points from Moycarkey within five minutes of resumption was a major blow to the Rovers as they struggled to counteract the positional changes which were working a treat for the Mid Tipp side. Winning more possession in midfield and in the half forward line, Moycarkey were benefitting from a more plentiful supply of ball into the forwards and Rovers were lucky to get a break, where Mcloughney kept the Rovers flag flying after eight minutes of the half.

The Rovers back line were coming under severe pressure to hold off Moycarkey as Maria Kinnane ate further into the lead as she split the uprights when she took a pass from Tara Casey. Continuing to push forward and take the game to Rovers, Michaela Graham sent in a high ball with Catriona Walsh pulled on the break to give Rovers keeper Rita Burke no chance and Maycarkey now had the margin reduced to just one point. Graham brought the sides level for the first time, with six minutes remaining but Julie Brennan restored the lead for Shannon Rovers. As both teams fought hard it was Sharon Ralph who levelled after Rita Burke’s great save which kept her side in line for a replay which is fixed for Saturday at 5pm in The Ragg.
