Depleted Rovers give way in replay

Moycarkey 0-15 Shannon Rovers 1-7

Report by Rose Mannion from the Nenagh Guardian newspaper

After their narrow escape the previous weekend, Moycarkey took their second chance as a depleted Shannon Rovers were forced to give way in this Intermediate semi-final replay on Saturday evening. Down two players from the previous week, one to Australia and the second France, Rovers just couldn’t cope with the more even balance of their opponents who were fired up from the drawn game. Despite shooting ten wides over the hour, Moycarkey always looked as if they were going to go forward to the final and the girls in red and white knew they had let their chance slip away in the previous outing.

This game was the total opposite to the drawn game as it was Moycarkey who set the pace and they dug the deepest when their backs were to the wall as they produced the scores when needed and had far more players able to get on the scoreboard and scored the first three from Mary Love, Maria Kinnane, Michaela Graham. Aoife McLoughney opened the Rovers account from a free after she was fouled by Tara Carey in the 18th minute.

A massive tussle for possession took place in the middle of the field between Rovers star player Lorraine Davis and the Moycarkey’s Michaela Graham and in the resulting scramble, Rovers fouled giving Graham the chance convert and she also added two further points to open a five-point lead in the period up to half time. Lorraine Davis and Sabrina Larkin read each other perfectly for Rovers next score which Davis picked off after she took a pass from Larkin and this was followed up quickly by McLoughney’s accuracy from two frees which kept the Rovers flag flying. As the game entered the final stages of the first half, Michaela Graham and Aoife McLoughney swapped points to leave just two separating the sides at the break. Aoife McLoughney had the deficit reduced to one point five minutes into the second half, as it wasn’t until the early stages of the last quarter and following positional changes that Moycarkey pulled away.

Rovers were beginning to show signs of tiredness, as their back line came under major pressure as Maeve Hackett, Mary Love, Kelly Hackett and Marianne Murphy went in search of scores. In fairness to all six backs it was Amanda Bourke and Aisling Carroll who featured strongly and they saw off a lot of potential attacks. However Moycarkey continued to pick of their points with Catriona Walsh finding the target after good work from Michaela Graham. Rovers had a chance to add to their tally too but were kept out with some great defending from Paula Ralph, Eithne Moran and Maeve Corcoran.

Catriona Walsh and Maria Kinnane continued to read the play well and punished Rovers for loose marking with Marianne Murphy and Michaela Graham tagging on points without reply from Rovers who were under pressure to get the ball up to their forwards. A great save from Rovers keeper Rita Bourke with five minutes remaining as the lethal trio of Maria Kinnane, Mary Love and Catriona Walsh worked the ball in and Marianne Murphy pulled hard, with Burke making the stop. However Maeve Hackett caught the resulting clearance and sent it over.

Michaela Graham split the uprights from a free with two minutes remaining and as the play spilled into injury time, a great effort from a Aoife McLoughney free went all the way to the back of the Moycarkey net, but it was way too little, way too late for a gallant Rovers side. Moycarkey now go on to meet Annacarty in the final to see which club enters the ranks of senior grade next year.
